Well, after talking and talking and talking about it, I finally went and did it and made a blog to chart the progress of Ron and I's first pregnancy. Yay! It's a few weeks, er months, in coming but a quick recap will bring everyone up to speed on the exciting events.
As of today I'm at 17 weeks and definitely in my second trimester. Our official due date is June 6 so I'll luckily miss being pregnant during the hottest part of the balmy Central Texas summer. Oh darn. ;-) Next week we find out if it's a boy or a girl and are so excited about that! We aren't really partial to a boy or a girl, we just pray constantly for a healthy baby whatever it is. It's been quite an interesting journey thus far.
Ron and I were not expecting to be expecting at this point in our marriage, but honestly we were thinking about trying for a baby sometime next year. As it turns out and Lord willing, we'll be raising our first baby by June of next year. But I get ahead of myself in this story.
So to back up a bit......We found out that we were pregnant sometime in Mid-October, maybe Oct. 15. It was a strange, exciting reality to find ourselves in. I told Ron later that in those moments, it was suddenly clear that I had been waiting my whole life for this moment, for this time, but I hadn't realized this until I saw that positive pregnancy test (twice taken, just be sure). It was a pleasant surprise for me because I've always thought in terms of future jobs, careers and schooling. Children were always in the mix, but I never knew how they would fit in exactly and sometimes the thought was scary. However, all that became clear as day when I saw those positive tests. I wanted this child more than anything in the world.
We were so excited and surprised that we immediately called our parents to tell them the good news. I know I wasn't very far along and many people wait until after the first trimester is over to start telling people, but we just can't keep a secret like that from our families. I called home and asked Dad, who was the only one home, if he thought he was a good age to be a grandpa. To which he replied (and I'll never forget) "Megan are you preggars?!" Preggars? Yup, I sure am preggars! (I think that's a new word Dad)
After talking to Dad I called Mom who was at a friend's house and asked her the same thing--how old will she be in April (to which we had a fascinating discussion of age. ;-) and asked her if she thought it would be a good age to be a grandma. Then she got what I was saying and screamed. It was hilarious! I could hear her shouting it out to the group she was with that we were pregnant so the secret was definitely out at that point but I didn't care. :-D It was too exciting!
Ron's parents were equally thrilled and happy to hear the news, although Diane asked if by us saying she was getting a grandchild if we meant another dog or some small critter.....not an unreasonable question for someone like me. With me, there are good odds I was talking about a small furry critter or small scaly critter. :-D ha! I reassured her that barring some unexplainable scientific oddity, indeed it is a human baby coming!
We went in for our first ultrasound at 7 weeks and got to see our little baby for the first time and hear his or her heartbeat (it's very fast, but that's normal for a little guy like that). The little guy was quickly dubbed "Peanut" because that's kinda the main shape they resemble at that age. :-} Hearing the heartbeat for the first time really brought things into sharp focus and reality for us. Wow, there really IS a little person in there! It was amazing. We got some really clear images of him/her to from the 3-D imaging machine they have at the doctor's office. They are amazing.
As far as my first trimester, I think I could have slept through the whole thing and been fine. I was absolutely fatigued everyday. Nausea came throughout the day, so the name "morning sickness" is really deceptive. However, I will do anything to avoid throwing up and I succeeded in that--not throwing up, but probably suffered for it. The odd thing about morning sickness for me was that if I felt sick eating made it better, which is totally counter intuitive. The last thing you want to do when feeling that sick is eat something, but the ever present crackers were a great life saver...and eggs..I can't get enough of them. :-). Ron was also a huge life saver around the house because I was pretty much worthless. He made dinner, cleaned the house, did laundry. He's amazing! I certainly couldn't have gotten through it as well as I did without him. He was very patient too....still is. ;-)
So my first trimester was pretty much smooth without incident. I'm so excited to start the second trimester because I feel so much better and I'm getting a baby bump! Yay! (I imagine there will be different feelings about that bump in the 8th month, but we'll deal with that then. :-)
This last year has ended very well for us. We found out we are pregnant and on December 19 Ron graduated from Truett Seminary with a Masters of Theological Studies. I'm so proud of him! We are truly looking forward to 2009. Ron has plans to become a teacher next fall and we'll have our own bundle of joy to keep us busy!
We drove to Amarillo on Tuesday to spend Christmas with Ron's family this year. We brought with us Ron's friend from seminary, Sungduk and Ron's grandmother, Nanny, the two dogs and a gecko (we decided to board the rabbit, I mean, how many critters and people can you put in a car really). It's been a very pleasant trip and restful. I do look forward to going home and getting that new ultrasound though. Another chance to sneak a peak at our baby! Yay!
I'll try real hard to keep this blog updated as often as possible. Definitely after our next ultrasound for sure! As soon as I figure out how to post some pictures, I will. Till then, it's words only!
I pray you all are well and had a very Merry Christmas.
Love you all,
Megan and Ron
